We did a magic square spreadsheet. I was not looking forward to this because I hate sudoku and anything like it. I started out by guessing quickly, then realized that this was getting me nowhere, so I decided to use logic. It started with realizing that 7,8, and 9 would never be in the same line, and everything fell into place from there.
We also explored Nettrekker. My district subscribes to this and I have a link to it on my Moodle site for my students. I often direct them there so that they can find good reliable information without having to wade through all of Google's garbage.
We read Chapters 5 and 6 in the book about Creativity and Problem Based Learning. I worked both of these concepts into my classroom last semester. I encouraged both in one project. I organized the students into groups, then they had to answer the question, "How could the Civil War have been prevented?" The groups then had to come up with an invention or idea that could have solved or prevented many of the different causes that led to the American Civil War. I realized that I and the teachers that I created this with actually went through and did many of the steps listed in Chapters 5 and 6, but it is really nice to have them all listed right here.
Something interesting that I've found both in my short experience and from talking to others in my group is that very few people, even qualified people, are able to evaluate and choose the software that they use for their district/job. This is generally because there are other people that are hired to do just that. Many of us have to simply use what is given to us through all of the bureaucracy. This is bad because we are unable to choose what we think might be best for ourselves and our co-workers. It is also good because we have other people to go through all of the different options that are out there, there is somebody that is seemingly more experienced that is being paid to do it.
Matt,
ReplyDeleteI am very impressed that you used spreadsheets to organized your wedding and honeymoon plans. Did you use Excel, or did you know about Google Docs or Zoho? How did you learn about formulas? That seems like such a fantastic facet of spreadsheets, but not something that is easily picked up without being taught. I viewed the videos on spreadsheets, and many of the formulas made sense and I was actually able to do as experimentation. But the multiplying for the recipe just didn't make sense to me. I had to get help. I think I would consider using spreadsheets to do grades and for making my lesson plans. Using the averaging formula could be really helpful in doing grades, although I probably won't have to do too much of that.
When it comes to software, as with you, we have people higher up(or used to) that would do the investigating and choosing. Now that I am working with our district LMSs, I realize that I may also be involved with some of the input on the district-wide choices. Are you able to choose any software that would be just for you, say something like Voice Thread or any of the things we have learned about in out classes? That would really be sad, because you have really good ideas for lessons, and I think you would be able to some really awesome things with some of these products out there.
So funny that you used a spreadsheet for your wedding because we did, too! I even put in addresses and such and made labels. Like you, I also don't know so much about the formulas and such which is what made me freak out with the spreadsheet assignment.
ReplyDeleteI like how you have Nettrekker set up for your students to access from your Moodle as well.
Have you had your students use spreadsheets for your class? I never have, so I am always interested in how people use them.
Also, do you have a person in your building who might be able to get you access to some software if you found some that you liked and wanted to use? I just find it so strange that the teachers have so little say in what gets purchased. I couldn't imagine being in such a large district like that. I guess that we all ultimately end up just using whatever gets handed to us!
