I'm feeling very good about my unit plan. I like the fact that this is a type of unit that I have taught before, and I plan to teach again, but I had not yet had the time to sit down and go into any detail about how much time I needed or what I really wanted the students to get out of it, etc. Now I have a much better idea of all these things and it is going to make the unit immeasureably better. Throughout the duration of this course, I have complained to myself about how I really don't want to do this unit plan because I have done things like this for countless education courses, in the end it has been helpful.
As this course draws to an end, even though it is at the end of summer, even though I am sick of taking classes once a week nearly non-stop for the past year, and even though I barely have any time to give these classes the time and attention they deserve for me to get the most out of them, I am once again glad that I took this course because I did get some good things out of it. I also loved a lot of Dave's stories in class each week and some of the small interesting facts and research he would mention...fascinating. Thanks, Dave!

I am really impressed by the fact that you have done this type of unit plan in your classes. When we were assigned this project, I felt the panic coming on. I had no clue what to do. But, once I got going on it, and with Dave's encouragement all along the way, I hate to say it, but it was kinda fun. I never had the opportunity to teach like this when I was a classroom teacher. I'm thinking this will be interesting!
ReplyDeleteYou have put together a truly excellent unit, Matt. You should think about recording and publishing snippets of its implementation. At the very least, get this submitted to one of the standards-based lesson sites (something I will encourage your class members to do also). I am also pleased that you found the course valuable. I hope the tangents weren't too distracting from the main point.
ReplyDeleteWow, you didn't waste any time cranking out that blog post... right away on Wednesday night. Way to be an overachiever! I was a little reluctant too at first about doing the whole unit project, considering I had done similar work in the M.A.T. classes, and the whole grind of constant classes and it being the end of the summer, and I'll be moving, and starting a new job, and won't really be in a classroom, but after going through the unit plan process it was a worthwhile experience and I think I'll have some great ideas to share with my future colleagues. I've gone through your plan also, and it looks great. Nice work!
